The 5 Important Rules To Observe in Website Design

By Taylor Nelson

When it comes to your website, extra attention should be paid to every minute detail to make sure it performs optimally to serve its purpose. Here are five important rules of thumb to observe to make sure your website performs well.

1) Do not use splash pages

The splash pages are the so-called gates of the website. In here you'll see fancy effects, such as moving pictures with audio, or a video. Most of all, the visitor needs to click on "Enter" or "Welcome", to be able to see the contents of the site. If the page takes time to load, this might be a reason for your reader to just click back instead. People want the info up front and quick.

2) A Huge NO for excessive banner advertisements

Even the least net savvy people have trained themselves to ignore banner advertisements so you will be wasting valuable website real estate. Instead, provide more valuable content and weave relevant affiliate links into your content, and let your visitors feel that they want to buy instead of being pushed to buy.

3) Navigation should be simple and clear

Your site must be able to accommodate beginners. Meaning, your website's navigation should be simple and clear, that even a child could go around it. Avoid using complicated flash-based menus, and multi-tiered drop down tools. If your visitors find it difficult to navigate through your site, they will quickly close it.

4) Give clear indications of where your user is

Similar when you are on a grocery shop, you want signage. You should allow your readers to easily go to the different parts of your website. Put a sign on where they currently are, and put links to other parts of your site. The browsing experience should be easy, if not, they will abandon your site.

5) As much as possible, avoid using audio

An audio on loop might confuse your readers. If you have written content on your site, don't over stimulate. There should be buttons that would allow people to adjust the volume, or stop the audio from playing.
